Over the years of this game, it's clear to see that Eve Dust 514 should be highly praised for tackling some of the most annoying player-driven "cheats" that video gaming is always plagued with (strafe-cheat, inviso-power cheat, elite-stomping, Aim-assist...). But I think this is one "cheat" (a term we can argue about later) that I don't think we should ask the game to fix. I don't think the problem has to do with Dust, and don't think it has to do with motivations or proper incentives. It's got to do with THIS population of players. Back in Dust's earlier days, the match was so hard to get through without being butchered by everything around you----that no one "left" the game in waves. The motivation to fight for your LIFE and survive was a strong motivation to get through the match any way you can.
Now that the game is "cushy" and pussycat-kind to players (in contrast to back then...) players..., well, you've posted it here yourself... we feel we're "too valuable to waste my skills and assets on a match that my team has clearly lost"... or I'm "a mercenary---I only fight when the right people or the right cause profits me", froo, froo, froo, pass me my caviar.
LOL, that's a long way away from the early motivation of "*&&%$, I need to find a way to make it through to Panel-B without getting snipered 8 times and run over 6!"
We may gripe and puke about "Scotty Matchmaker", but it has succeeded for us, and gave us what we wanted SO WELL, that we now have the luxury of thinking about our "valuable time", losing our "12 out of 218 units of Officer-type HAVs", and "the importance" of our personal combat skills being used productively to assist the dumb blueberries who I'm thrown in this team with. Today's Dust population (mostly) fights for our "hope for GAIN", not hope of LIFE, like in the past.
To address our new "mercenary" playing style (YOUR style, not really mine), the only thing I suggest is inserting a "Tax" mechanic into the game, so that you pay a "fee" for leaving the matches. You want to leave? Pay the "exit tax", which will be automatically deducted from your Ranking. Maybe you sacrifice LP for every time you hit the leave-button, maybe you get a "DED- loyalty status" that ranges from 'highly-loyal' to 'criminal-flag'. Or maybe you severely reduce your Loyalty Rank, and have to "buy" your "major" rank back by spending more Aurum. But somehow, if you want to walk around the combat zone like a "King, too important to lose a match with bums", an "Athlete, with too many girls on his arm to waste my muscle in a match I know my teammates are too puny to win", or a "Billionaire, too concerned about losing a few dimes from my bank, to make a contribution to homeless blues in this match",... you should PAY a game-tax for leaving.
It's A GAME. It's supposed to be challenging enough to take your mind off the real-world people and things that frustrate your daily life. But if the game is "too danged easy to just sit around in", you will just hang around in it and aim all your real-world frustration on the OTHER PLAYERS IN THE GAME. OMG, I wish we could turn back time and subject today's Dust population to 2012's Dust combat environment. Some need the exposure, and some just need the reminder.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
